At least 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
