Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using such medications need to be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
